What is the SFP Program and its benefits?
The strengthening families model is a proven effective
family-based prevention intervention program consisting
of the following:
- A Parent Training Program;
- A Children’s Skills Training Program, and
- A Family Skills Training Program, where parents
and children will participate together
The Parent Skills Training is geared towards improving
parenting skills.
The Children’s Skills Training is designed to increase
children’s social skills, communication skills and peer
resistance skills. The children learn in group discussions
to better understand the stressors and problems faced by
their parents.
The Family Skills Training Program provides a time
when the parents and children can practice the
communication and relations skills they have learned in
their individual sessions. Our experience is that the
children really enjoy being involved in a class with the
“grown ups”. They enjoy the attention and
empowerment of being considered important players in
family relations.
Overall, the SFP program promotes to achieve:
- Improved Family Relations
- Improved Parenting Skills
- Improved Children’s Behavior
- Increased Social Competencies
- Reduction/Prevention of Alcohol and Drug
Abuse
The program has also demonstrated reductions in:
- Aggression
- Juvenile Delinquency
